I would recommend this book to all teenage girls. Gayle is only fourteen and pregnant with her second baby when this book starts. She is forced to make some tough decisions. As a result of her second pregnancy, Gayle is sent down South to live with her mother's family. It is there that she learns what family really means. Great book! My only warning would be to check the age and maturity of any students before reading this book as a class or assigning it to your class because there is some mature language in the book.Tags : Amazon.com: Like Sisters on the Homefront (9780140385618): Rita Williams-Garcia: Books,Rita Williams-Garcia,Like Sisters on the Homefront,Puffin Books,0140385614,JUV039060,Social Themes - Friendship,African Americans - Georgia,African Americans;Fiction.,Afro-Americans;Fiction.,Families - Georgia,Family life - Georgia,Family life;Fiction.,Georgia,African American,Afro-Americans,Children's & young adult fiction & true stories,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Family life,Fiction,General fiction (Children's Teenage),JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION People & Places United States African American,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Adolescence & Coming of Age,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Friendship,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Grades 7-9 Ages 12-14,People & Places - United States - African-American,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Friendship, coming of age;7th grade reading books;6th grade reading books;family;diversity;african american;books for teens;friendship;teen books;ya books;young adult books;books for 13 year old girls;books for 12 year old girls;books for 11 year old girls;books for teen girls;realistic fiction;teen girl books;teen fiction books;middle grade;tween books for girls ages 11-14;national book award finalists 2017;national book award finalists;realistic fiction books for kids 9-12;books for 10 year old girls, realistic fiction; family; books for 12 year old girls; books for 11 year old girls; friendship; middle grade; coming of age; 7th grade reading books; 6th grade reading books; diversity; african american; books for teens; teen books; ya books; young adult books; books for 13 year old girls; books for teen girls; teen girl books; teen fiction books; tween books for girls ages 11-14; national book award finalists 2017; national book award finalists; realistic fiction books for kids 9-12; 5th grade reading books,JUVENILE FICTION People & Places United States African American,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Adolescence & Coming of Age,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Friendship,People & Places - United States - African-American,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes Friendship,Afro-Americans,Family life,Fiction,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Children's & young adult fiction & true stories,General fiction (Children's Teenage)

Good cultural read

An excellent book to read, for young African American reader. It shows the struggle of teens that have made wrong choices and find their paths later on in life. Definitely, a great book for teens who have gotten pregnant a made choice to stand against all odds! I love me some, Rita Williams-Garcia books!
This author is one of my favorites. Her characters are so real. Even though the adult language which comes out of this 14 year old character's mouth can be disturbing, Its typical of teens today and a revelation when seen in print. This is a heartwarming, thought provoking little novel about mistakes, second chances, and family. Read it, then pick up the one crazy summer trilogy and I assure you, williams -garcia will be on your must read list forever.
