CIRCLE OF FIVE The Phayul trilogy Book 1 eBook Jan Raymond

I'll preface this all by saying I am a huge fan of coming-of-age tales. But this one downright knocked my socks off, because when these five kids start coming of age, they do it in spades! Sam and Cassie are brother and sister, but more or less despise one another. Sebastian is a spoiled rich kid. Ryan is a jock. And Maya is your average teenage girl. None of them, on the surface, have much in common. But one day, the five serve a detention at school together and a freak electrical storm brews up. And then the five each begin to exhibit otherworldly powers. As they work with the school football coach to grow into their powers, to learn to focus and control those powers, an array of forces begin to coalesce against them, binding them tighter and tighter to one another as they fight for their very lives. Jan Raymond is to be complimented for weaving all these seemingly disparate threads into an amazing tapestry. I can't wait for her next installment!

CIRCLE OF FIVE The Phayul trilogy Book 1 eBook Jan Raymond Reviews

I started to read this book on a lazy Saturday morning and before I noticed I had almost finished it. The storyline is very captivating and the characters quite realistic. I loved that this story has something for everyone and somehow felt a bit of a ‘rebel’ in its genre. That said even though this is obviously aimed at young adult readers I think this is a story that everyone who loves a good fantasy story with a hint of magic will enjoy. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series!

I can easily see this book turning into a major movie!
Five students the jock, the jerk, the princess, the scholar, and the autistic little brother set the cast for this fast-paced story. Brought together a la "The Breakfast Club" in detention, an "electrical storm" strikes during their punishment causing strange and mysterious side effects, from the ability to read minds to unparalleled strength. They must work together to figure out what is happening to them and why. Raymond keeps the reader guessing and I found myself unable to stop reading. Most interesting to me was how the author portrayed typical teenage struggles in the mist of the mystical circumstances they were placed. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a well-crafted plot!
While it seems to be intended for young adults, I think it makes for a fun read at any age. I was captured by the end of chapter one and barely put the book down until I was done. Woven into the story are various lessons about life and morality, but as with all good stories they are embedded seamlessly into the action. All of the central characters are well done with different strengths and weaknesses. One of the lessons is that they are far more when working together. Another lesson to be learned is what not to do as a parent. We see some good examples of this in the book. Although the book is definitely just the first installment in a larger story, it stands alone as a very enjoyable classic superhero origins tale. I can’t wait to read the next book. I am especially looking forward to seeing Sam grow more confident and powerful, or at least I hope that is what will happen.
At first, I thought this book was too simply written. The vocabulary is not challenging at all for a high-school level reader, and the descriptions and characterization seem almost lazy. The author seems to just want to tell the story, instead of focusing on a literary product. The scene in which the lightning first strikes, causing the special powers, seemed almost laughable to me.

But I admit, it works well. After getting used to the simple prose, the story just caught me up. The plot was very interesting, and the reader is drawn in more and more to the strange and bizarre lifestyles of these five teenagers. The ending was superb, as the author saved the best secrets for last. We now know why there is a special boy in there who seems to be the last to develop his powers. In a way, this informal style of writing works well, because these are teenagers, and they act as typical teenagers would.

One thing that made me uneasy were teachers using a lot of their authority to undergo activities, day in and day out, that teachers in all schools wouldn't ethically be allowed to do. But, I can see how Mr. Harris' authority as teacher was necessary for the story to happen, so I'll gladfully suspend my disbelief or unease to enjoy the story, which is far more important for me as reader. And, the rest of the story is coherent, so all's well that ends well.

Now I'm hooked to watch out for the second book in the series.
"Circle of Five" is a great adventure and coming-of-age tale for all ages. The prologue starts the reader out with a fantastical scene and mystery all in one. The start of the book hooked me and made me want to keep reading just to find out how everything would tie together. The five teens represent a wide range of characters, each with their own personality that leaps off the page. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each one as the pages turned and the story progressed. Their first scene together in detention reminded me somewhat of an unusual twist on the "The Breakfast Club" crowd.

The plot itself is so interesting and I really want to say a lot about it, but I don't want to spoil anything. What I can say is that the book took my imagination for a wild journey down roads I've never traveled. It is definitely a book you'll want to read, and a great start to what's sure to be a fantastic series!
