Finished the entire book series in two days. That's how good the books were.I loved the female main character, Savannah or "Sav" as everyone calls her. She's an Aussie who lands LA and won't change who she is for anybody. But Tate pulls her in from minute one and makes her want to change her rules. Now that's a great start to a book. Both are bed hoppers, from one bed to another, to help drown out their pain. But they are going to find that it's hard to resist the one you're meant for.
But the journey's rough which I enjoyed. The ups and downs. I get to see them grow and figure out things. Their friends are a great group of characters as well. Tate's sister who's very blunt, Tanzi. Tanzi's boyfriend, Jack. Also Sav's father figure, Mr. Davenport, as she calls him to bug him. "Please call me Simon!"
There's certainly a lot of surprises and twists throughout this series. Each penny was worth it to purchase all three to see this series to the end. I loved especially that the author made sure if Sav spoke, the words would fit her country. Not just "thongs" for flip flops or "candy floss" for candy cotton. But words like organize. For instance, if it's Sav's chapter, it would be spelled "organise." If it was Tate's, it would be "organize." The little touches was pretty neat! I really appreciated the details.
After finishing this entire series, I did hope that there would be more spin offs from this. Especially for Tanzi and Mr. Davenport aka Simon. I know she already has a boyfriend and seems happy with Jack. For some reason, I kept thinking .. "But... why........ not?" I don't know if I'm crazy or not lol.

The story
As Savannah boards the plane to L.A. it's her intention to start over and begin a new life, leaving her old demons behind in Australia. But she starts realises it's not quite that simple and soon Sav is back to her old destructive ways. But after spending time her her new best friend Tanzi, her brother Tate and some new friends, she starts to build a new life for herself. Tanzi has a very positive influence on Sav, encouraging her to make the most of her new opportunities. Tate on the other hand is both a help & a complication to Sav - she knows she's attracted to him, and he could be really good for her. But the issues from her past make it difficult for Sav to believe she deserves to be happy. They both struggle to accept their attraction and Tate & Sav share some awesome flirty arguments, that just build the sexual tension between them, until you know something has got to give...and when it does, phew, it was HOT!!!!
The characters
Savannah is the kind of character that we'd all like be sometimes - she's feisty, sassy, confident and isn't afraid to go after what or who she wants. She has a wicked sense of humour and some of her lines are just pure awesome! She's not afraid to have a wild night out and knows how to party. But underneath that tough girl persona there is an insecure girl, hurting & struggling to deal with her past and afraid to fall in love...enter Tate Connors!!!
Tate, oh Tate, is one hot sexy hunk of a man that will have you swooning, sighing and drooling all over the place. He's a player, he's arrogant and he's incredibly temperamental. But this just makes him all the more sexy! He's had drama in his past too that makes him steer clear of commitment, but all that changes when he sets his eyes on Sav.
For me, the supporting characters made a huge difference in this story - with Sav's best friend & Tate's sister Tanzi, her boyfriend Jack. Tanzi would be a kick-ass best friend, and the kind of person you know would always be there for you. And of course we can't forget Mr Davenport, Sav's sexy older boss, who is the only real father figure she's had as an adult and is always there to support her. All these characters have positive influences on Sav & Tate's lives and they also setup some hilarious situations - every time Jack walked in on Tate & Sav I burst out laughing!
The romance
The romance between Sav & Tate is one of those I-Hate-You-And-Insult-The-Crap-Out-Of-You-But-I-Acutally-Really-Like-You kind. And the sexual tension was flying all over the place between these two! They are both so alike - neither feel deserving or capable of a loving relationship and hide behind a string of meaningless one nighters. It's not until they meet each other that they start to see the possibility of a real relationship.
"I'm into this, Sav. I am into you and this isn't just a weekend fling to me. You are my girl and now that I've got you, I'm certainly not letting you go."
The Writing
What I loved about this book was the great balance of drama & humour. With both Sav & Tate dealing with heavy issues, you'd expect this to be a very moody read, but Rachel has done a wonderful job of using sarcasm and clever dialogue to give some light to what could have been a very dark story. And I also LOVED all the Aussieisms scattered throughout the book! Everyone so needs to start calling in Fairy Floss!!! D
FINAL WORD
I loved this book, the characters are different from a lot of the other NA romances out there. And the Australian elements gave this book a really unique feeling. This book "is going straight to the pool room!" (yes that is an Aussie phrase). I challenge you to read this book and not fall prey to The Tate Connors Effect!!

Great Debut! Hot, emotional, and addicting! I did not want to put this book down! I kept wanting to read more and more. “Just Breathe” is an amazing start to what will definitely be a phenomenal series!
I want to start off by saying that the Prologue is truly heartfelt and beautiful! My heart was smiling while reading it. This book hooked me right then and there.
“No matter what life you are handed, whatever you are dealt, whatever struggles you may face, please remember to just breathe. Just breathe, Savannah, because that’s all you will need.”
“Just Breathe” kicks off with Savannah Rae, better known as Sav, moving to LA to work alongside her boss/man she sees as a father figure, Mr. Davenport – whom FYI, is AMAZING! Sav is one feisty Aussie, let me tell you. She knows what she likes and wants, and goes for it. And she sure as hell doesn’t apologize to anyone. Until, Tate.
Once in LA, she comes face-to-face with possibly THE hottest guy of California, Tate Connors. Whoa. I’m sure feeling that “Tate Connors Effect” I’ve heard so much about! Let’s just say, he’s that bad boy you can’t help but drop your panties for!!! Ha! And trust me, he’ll make you enjoy every second! ;) *sigh* Yep. I’m in love!
“You’re the greatest challenge I’ll have Savannah. There is something about you I want.”
Both Tate and Sav have heart-breaking pasts. This is mainly the reason they get off to such a rough start. They can’t stand each other, yet they can’t get enough. They literally get under each other’s skin, and keep coming back for more.
“I know that you are overtaking my mind. I want you like I’ve never wanted anyone before. I can’t get enough of you and that, to me, is perfect. You are perfect.” – Tate
Tate and Sav are perfect for each other and just what they were missing. They needed to forgive themselves, let go of their pasts, and learn to love again. And Rachel Brookes did a phenomenal job delivering this journey to her readers. My heart broke and healed alongside theirs.
“I want to be the one to put you back together. You’ve just got to let me.”
“Just Breathe” was all in all a wonderfully written debut. The plot kept me turning the pages wanting to see where Sav and Tate’s journey would lead them next. The secondary characters were very well developed and fan-freaking-tastic! Tanzi (Tate’s twin sister) and Jack were HILARIOUS. I really want to be friends with these characters. They are super entertaining, I promise.
Given the fact that this is book ONE in the series, there is a lot more to tell regarding Tate, Sav, and the rest of the gang. The book doesn’t really end in a cliffhanger, but you just know that something is bound to happen… soon. I would say, “Just Breathe” has a “happy for now” ending. Yes, you’ll want more, but it ends in a good place. I highly recommend you go buy this book!
“We were beautifully broken in so many ways.”
