During my high school years in the DC area one of my passions was caving. On one trip, we were preparing to enter a cave and I ignited my source of light, a carbide mining light -no such things as LEDs in those days - and it started to rain. Told my buddy to bring my pack and I would meet him by the pit which was about a hundred feet in and ran to the entrance to avoid getting soaked. I made my way down the passage and settled on a rock protrusion that extended out over the edge of the pit which was probably about 50 feet deep. A moment later I heard a "thwock" and felt something bounce off my helmet. I tilted my head back and the next big blob of water fell on the flame in the lamp, extinguishing it. There I sat in total darkness with drops of water falling on my helmet like Chinese water torture. The pack that I had asked my buddy to bring held my other two mandatory sources of light so there I was hanging over a void and no place go. To this day, I can remember everything about that situation, the sounds of the dripping water, the smooth slick rock, the total blackness and the sense of the void in front of me. Despite my years of experience I must admit to being pretty frightened at the ridiculous spot I put myself in. No problem, thinks I, just wait for my buddy. But the minutes ticked by and began to feel like hours. Decided to take one more shot at reigniting the light which used a roller and flint arrangement. Dried it as best I could on my coveralls and gave it a spin. It caught! Stayed lit long enough for me to back up around two turns and see the light from the entrance and my friend headed my way with my pack.OK, so why put you through that long winded introduction? Mainly because the description of portions of this novel that take place in a cave brought those memories in vivid detail. I've have read a lot about cave exploration but don't think I have encountered writing that can truly put one there in the terrifying fashion that Preston and Child can. A small part of the story but as one reviewer noted - "these guys can really scare the hell out of you!"
I'm not usually a fan of joint authorship but the FBI Agent Pendergast series really holds my interest. (He is on "vacation" for this case.) Plot moves along, characters are well drawn and interesting and yes, they will manage to scare you even above ground!

Still Life with Crows Agent Pendergast series Douglas Preston Lincoln Child Books Reviews
I liked this book overall. It is a fun addition to the Pendergast saga. It has everything I have come to expect from Preston and Child (well-written, fun factoids, developed scene and setting...), but I have a few minor issues with this book...
For one thing, this book does very little as far as getting to know Pendergast goes. Though he is the only consistent character so far in the series, he never quite takes center stage. To this point, we (the readers) know very little about him; only that he is moneyed, smart, resourceful, and always one step ahead of local law enforcement. Still, despite the lack of revealing information, it is a fun little romp/murder mystery with a familiar character, pace, and scope. Great for airplanes...
My other minor complaint is a plot device that is used near the end of the book. Not spoiling anything, but an important minor character decides to take things into their own hands, without consulting Pendergast or any other appropriate authority, and so gets in a huge heap of trouble. One of the best things about this series is that the stories flow naturally and the characters make reasonable, calculated decisions. In this, Preston and Child have strayed from that tradition, and it was disappointing. Alas, the book was still enjoyable. I will read the next one soon.
I'm so happy to have found this series! I love the stories and character development, and love slowly getting to know Agent Pendergast. For some reason, I keep thinking "Prendergast." Weird. I've only just finished this fourth book in the series, and was quite surprised at the turn at the end. I think the characters are nicely developed, and I always enjoy having people to dislike and people to love. My only complaint is the authors' use of incorrect "could care less" term instead of the correct "couldn't care less" (after all, if you could care less, why don't you <smile>). But that a just a nitpick. I love forward to reading all of the books in this series. I have enjoyed Lee Child's other novels, but I'm not sure I've read Douglas Preston yet.
It started off a little slowly, but then it gathered speed and I couldn't put it down. Amazing ending. I stumbled on these authors just recently and I am super hooked. I had picked up "Cabinet of Curiosities" at the library's book sale and was totally mesmerized, so I decided to read the whole Pendergast series in order. These are some of the more exciting books I have ever read and I have read many thousands. I also have a great interest in anthropology, so that kind of flavor appeals to me. Yes, I did read Preston's non-fiction "Lost City of the Monkey God" which was also excellent and which is what started this process.
The book was fascinating right up until I got to page 306, and then instead of pages 307-338, pages 275-306 were repeated. As much as I want to see what happens next, AMAZON WON'T LET ME RETURN IT FOR A REPLACEMENT. Apparently, some bean-counting mental midget has rigged the ordering system so returns aren't possible if the order is more than a couple of weeks old. Way to go ! You now have joined the ranks of those companies that are so big and successful that you can now blithely go out of your way to screw the customer.
